ZERO ENERGY COOL CHAMBER
Approximately 30 to 35% of fruits, vegetables & flower from total produce in India goes as waste because of sudden Ripping due to high temperature and humid atmospheric conditions and thus resulting into loss of approx. Rs. One lakh Crore. Lot of efforts by Govt. authorities are going on to save these losses and huge amount of money spend into food processing, cold chains, air-conditioning, transportation system and at village levels support to the farmers but still it is a big task pending in our hands.

We are encouraged by the basic idea of Prof. Susanta K. Roy (Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi) remarkable work in this direction. We have worked on Prof. Roy idea and further simplified the process and made a more cost effective & more users’ friendly system at a very nominal cost. The chamber can keep the temperature 10 to 15 *C cooler than the outside temperature and maintain relative humidity.
Construction Method of Cooling Chamber:
  • Put 3 inch layer of (R.H.A) on the ground flour size of approximately 5.5 ft x 4 ft. Cover the R.H.A layer with new Bricks.
  • Erect 2 walls using new bricks to the height of 2.25ft and leave a space of 4 inch in between both the walls.
  • Fill the 4 inch space between the erected walls with Rice Husk Ash (R.H.A)
  • Make a shed/ thatch frame on the top cover with dry grass etc.
Operations:
  1. Fill water into the space when Rice Husk Ash (R.H.A) is filled to make R.H.A. completely wet.
  2. Put water every 24 hours to keep the R.H.A. wet.
  3. Cover the top cover frame with plastic sheet to retain the humidity
  4. Store the fruits and vegetables in this chamber by keeping in perforated plastic crates.
  5. Cover these crates with a thin polyethylene/ plastic sheet.
Advantages:
  1. Can be constructed by an unskilled person.
  2. No energy is required.
  3. Small farmer can store produce for a few days thus allowing farmers to retain margins in their produce.
  4. Useful for temporary storage of curd, milk and cooked food.
  5. Can also be used for Mushroom cultivation.
Precautions:
  1. Build in area where air prevails.
  2. Build in an elevated place to avoid rain water logging.
  3. Use new bricks only.
  4. Keep the R.H.A. drench with water.
  5. Roof over to prevent direct exposure to sun.
  6. Use only plastic crates for storage.
  7. Prevent water coming in contact with stored material.
  8. Keep the chamber clean from fungus/insects/pests & reptiles etc.
